ABSTRACT
This research work focuses on the Impact of credit management in commercial banks with reference to Sterling Bank Plc. The research work examines how credit is being managed in commercial banks. It gives the historical background of Sterling Bank Plc.
The researcher believes that with good credit management, banks will be able to derive a huge profit from lending. The researcher seeks to establish the following facts:
(i) is lending interest a major part of commercial bank’s total earnings?
(ii) Will a good credit management policy reduce the higher level of bad debt?
(iii) Are borrowers required to pledge security for their loans?
(iv) Will effective management of credit increase the profitability of banks?
It must also be noted that in an attempt to give this research work a theoretical framework, newspapers, magazines, books, journals, internet. Previous project works relating to the topic and also unpublished works from other writers were reviewed.
With thorough review as a guide, a research instrument which is questionnaire was designed to collect the data. A total of twenty (20) copies of the questionnaires were distributed among the staff of sterling bank plc which was duly completed and returned.
Also, simple percentage, descriptive tables and chi-square test were adopted in analyzing the data collected during the course of the project.
It was realized that lending interest forms major part of the total earnings of commercial banks.
It was also observed that when the application of good cannon of lending is used, loan recovery is aided. I was able to detect that effective credit management has a great impact on the reduction of bad debts.
Therefore, as a researcher, I recommend that:
There should be a room for bankers to share ideas, skills and knowledge on how best they can tackle problems relating to bad debts in commercial banks.
There should also be a forum whereby banks’ representatives can be enlightened on how significant and important a good credit management can be of use.
